2013 BCS National Championship Betting Odds

April 10th, 2012 | Author: John

We’re three months removed from the last college football game, yet the SEC is still is the darling conference of oddsmakers. Half of the top-8 favorites for the 2012 National Championship are from the SEC and five are in the top-15.

No school outside of the SEC has won the National Championship since 2005. In fact, it got even uglier when Alabama, which didn’t even appear in the conference championship, was admitted into the title game against LSU over Big 12 champ Oklahoma State. It was the first time two schools from the same conference met in the National Championship in the BCS era.

That kind of perceived prejudice created some of the hottest debate for a playoff system, a reudementary one that would admit four teams into a bracket-style tournament to eliminate the SEC bias that is actually kind of validated.

That could open things up in the future, but for now, a lot of teams are going to make themselves extremely difficult for voters to ignore.

The team on the top of everyone’s list is USC, which got a huge boost in the NCAA Football National Championship Betting Odds when quarterback Matt Barkley elected to stay another year. He could have contended with Andrew Luck for top pick in the NFL Draft. instead, he makes the Trojans the favorites to win the National Championship, according to Bovada, at 4/1.

USC is the only team favored higher than last year’s top-two LSU and Alabama. The Tigers, returning most of their starters are a 9/2 favorite, with the Tide trailing at 11/2.

The one thing those three teams have against them is conference competition. USC still has a really scary Oregon (10/1) to contend with and LSU and Alabama have to battle each other. In fact, half of top-8 favorites are from the SEC.

That’s why a case can be made for Florida State, fresh off two incredible recruiting classes that make them the favorites in the ACC. Despite trouble translating that into success on the field, the Noles won’t play any serious title contenders this year and at 12/1, are the clear favorites in-conference. Their path got even easier when West Virginia backed out of their season-opening meeting.
